Jeanne und ihre Mutter könnten unterschiedlicher kaum sein: Während sich die extrovertierte Margarette als Barkeeperin einen Mann nach dem nächsten anlacht, ist die schüchterne Tochter am liebsten alleine. Die Nachtdienste ihres Jobs in einem Freizeitpark verlaufen ruhig, bis ein neues Fahrgeschäft Jeanne in seinen magischen Bann zieht. Jumbo, so der Name des Karussells, wird bald zu ihrem heimlichen Gefährten. Doch darf diese ungewöhnliche Liebe Bestand haben?
Regisseurin Zoé Wittock legt mit Jumbo ein fulminantes Spielfilmdebüt hin, das 2020 beim Sundance Film Festival und der Berlinale Publikum wie Kritiker*innen faszinierte. Mit einer gehörigen Portion Humor und Fantasie erzählt das gefühlvolle Drama von einem ungewöhnlichen Coming Out. Und „Porträt einer jungen Frau in Flammen“-Star Noémie Merlant bannt erneut mit ungeheurer Raffinesse eine Frau auf die Leinwand, die dafür kämpft, lieben zu dürfen.

Jeanne and her mother could hardly be more different: While the extroverted Margarette is a bartender, constantly flirting with men, the shy daughter, who still lives at home, prefers to be alone. The night shifts at her job in an amusement park run smoothly until a new ride casts a magical spell over Jeanne. Jumbo, as the carousel is called, soon becomes her secret companion. But is this unusual love allowed to last?
Director Zoé Wittock makes a brilliant feature film debut with Jumbo, which fascinated audiences and critics alike at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale earlier this year. At eye level, with a good portion of humour and fantasy, the emotional drama tells of an unusual coming out. And „Portrait of a Lady on Fire“ -star Noémie Merlant once again captures with tremendous sophistication the image of a woman fighting to be allowed to love.
