Johannes Mössinger began his collaboration with the NY scene 20 years ago and has always brought fresh, new ideas with him, fed by the coexistence of European and American influences and energies. With his virtuosic piano playing he makes a sensation as well as a composer of expressive, filigree music. Most recently, he recorded the CDs „New By Two“ and „Call It Even“ in duo with Joel Frahm and his very independent and contemporary recording of the Inventions by J.S.Bach. In his current international quartet Mössinger’s exceptional talent and his complexity at the piano now comes into its own. His imaginative piano playing seems to act as a spiritual center and at the same time allows space and freedom for the ensemble, for each individual musician. This can be heard on the latest album „Painting In Blue“ (UNIT, Oct. 22), a recording in which this quartet plays itself into a veritable frenzy.
Freedom of the moment and a sense of the music’s form and architecture are cornerstones in this ensemble that brings together four exceptional musicians. „His works clearly demonstrate how strongly he thinks free of clichés and develops a completely unique beat,“ writes Jazz’n’More about the Freiburg-based pianist, who has played with many jazz stars and, as a bandleader, repeatedly relies on American friends.
Currently, for example, on the New York drummer Adam Nussbaum, who has already written jazz history as a tireless initiator and inspirer. Trombonist Andy Hunter, born in Michigan and an integral part of the New York scene, is today a member of the renowned WDR Bigband Cologne, while bassist Martin Gjakonowski can look back on many years of collaboration with musicians such as Bojan Z, Tony Lakatos, Charlie Mariano, Bob Berg and Dusko Goykovich.
