Gypsy Magic

Synopsis

This is a funny and yet a sad story of a Gypsy family of great dreamers making the last desperate efforts to find their way out of the Balkan labyrinth of absurdity, evil and misfortune.

In terms of atmosphere and associations that come to mind, the story explores a situation in which "one set of rules of the social game have suddenly vanished and no longer apply, while new ones are still being sought and established" or, in more loose interpretation, it means a situation of the lights going out, while the only set of rules that apply, in the blackout are those that of finding your way around, as best as you can.

"The Gypsies are just a picturesque background for the universal story of the rejected and maladjusted, of those who play badly the game of "finding their way around in the dark", people we meet every day and whose tragicomic fate rarely occupies more than one minute of our thoughts, because they are not people who ever make the first five pages of the daily press.

This film is about the little people, about the forgotten street heroes who make the news only in the obituaries and crime section. The fact that the people in this story are Gypsies has more to do with the ethnological complexity of this population and their inborn affinity towards "irrational" behavior, than it does with the ungratifying position of being among the poorest in the system, and the least integrated ethnic comrnunity in these regions.
