selfSTORAGE

Synopsis

Not only materialism, high rents, and a shortage of space, but also a certain lifestyle (still) quite different from the European way of living, have made private self storage neccessary for example in New York.
Armed with a camera, the Hamburg-based Viennese filmmaker observed how people in New York make their lives easier or an income for living possible through renting small rooms in large storage buildings, where they store the likes of clothes, books and videotapes. Some visit their lockers every second day - others about three times a year.

A few we met again at home, in the studio, at the market, in other towns, or in cyberspace.

Kathy Rae Huffman on the move. Josely Carvalho storing online her silkscreens, she made during the last 20 years. Christian from The Village. TJ Glenn, stuntman and fight choreographer. Delano Rhyne, well-known Times Square artist and collector of cans. Sandy brings forgotten things out of the darkness of the storage to well illuminated eBay.
