The historiography of dance in the 21st century is faced with the question of the meaning of dance and identity in the postcolonial age. The choreographer Faustin Linyekula from the Democratic Republic of Congo precisely describes this balancing act of contemporary dance that seeks to elude political appropriation and representation, without being unpolitical for this reason; quite to the contrary: Cosmopolitan positions of contemporary dance stage their own body politics in a transnational space, irrevocably uniting Europe’s and Africa’s past ...
