This concert starts with an enduring classic: Mozart’s »Little Night Music« is a wonderful reflection of the conviviality of the Mozart period. After that, no one less than the legendary pianist Radu Lupu steps up to the challenges of Beethoven’s lyrical piano concerto. When working on the second movement, the composer is said to have been thinking of Orpheus, who tamed the furies of the underworld. The second part of the concert features Brahms’s Third Symphony, whose sound world is deeply emotional throughout. In it the composer uses the F–A–F melody (Frei, aber froh – Free but happy) as a motto to express his freedom and independence.
